How to choose a space heater for winter

A good heater is not the most powerful one, but the one that suits your room and how you use it, and switches itself off if it tips over or overheats. This is what to read on the product page before the cold, not after.

Start from the room and how you use it

Before looking at the wattage, ask three questions: how big is the room? Do you want quick heat for an hour, or steady warmth for hours? And who is at home: children, elderly people or pets? The answers decide the type before the model. A large majlis needs something different from a small office, and a heater near a playing child needs more protection than one used for minutes in a bathroom.

The types and what each gives up

This guide is about electric heaters. Gas, charcoal or wood heating carries different suffocation risks, and Civil Defense stresses ventilating the room and lighting charcoal and wood outside.

Wattage and electricity use

The wattage tells you how much electricity the heater draws at full power. More watts heat faster and a larger space, but use more and load the socket and wiring more. So:

• Match the wattage to the room. Many makers state the room size a model suits; read it and compare with your room.
• Choose several power settings. A heater with two or three levels lets you run it low once the room is warm.
• A thermostat saves. When it switches the unit off at the chosen temperature, hours at full power fall.
• Close off the cold. An open door or a draughty window makes any heater run longer than it needs to.

Safety features not to give up

• Tip-over switch. Cuts power if the heater falls or tilts. Look for it written in the specifications, not only in the pictures.
• Overheat protection. Switches the unit off if it gets hotter than the safe limit, for example if covered with cloth.
• Thermostat. Holds a temperature you choose instead of running at full power all the time, which is thriftier and safer.
• Timer. Turns the heater off after a set time; useful if you forget.
• Front guard and cooler surfaces. Important in a home with children.
• Plug and cord. A plug that fits Saudi home sockets without an adapter, and a cord long enough to reach a wall socket directly.

Conformity with Saudi standards

Household electrical appliances in Saudi Arabia are subject to the technical regulations of the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO). According to international testing bodies, SASO IEC 60335-2-30 for electric room heaters has been mandatory since February 2022. In practice: buy from a seller who can confirm the model meets Saudi requirements, and avoid devices with no clear maker's name or model number. Before or after buying, search the brand and model on the defective products recall site.

Safe use: what Civil Defense says

• Do not leave the heater on while sleeping, and switch it off when you leave the room.
• Keep it away from curtains, furniture and flammable materials, and out of walkways.
• Do not dry clothes on or near it, and do not use it to heat food or water.
• Watch children and do not leave them alone with it.
• Check the wiring, and do not overload sockets.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission advises plugging heaters directly into a wall outlet, not an extension cord or power strip, and placing them on a hard, level, non-flammable surface away from rugs.

Common mistakes

• Choosing the highest wattage "just in case" for a small room, so it overheats the room and cycles on and off.
• Running the heater on an extension lead with other devices.
• Placing it on a rug or behind a sofa.
• Relying on the product picture instead of reading the safety features in the specifications.
• Buying a model with no traceable maker's name or model number.
