How to choose a cordless stick vacuum

The advertised run time is usually in the weakest mode. What decides its value at home is a head that suits your floors, the battery and its replacement, and how it copes with dust and sand.

What decides the choice

A cordless stick vacuum is a tool for speed: take it off the wall, clean up what fell or what the dust brought in, and put it back in minutes. Whether it works in your home depends on three things before the brand: your floors, the area you want to clean on one charge, and the weight in your hand when you lift it to curtains, shelves or into the car.

Many Saudi homes combine ceramic or marble floors with rugs and fitted carpet in the majlis and bedrooms, plus fine dust and sand that come in with every storm. That setting decides the cleaner head you need, the bin size, and how often you will wash the filter.

Run time: read it with its mode

The big number in the advert is usually the run time in the lowest power mode with a non-motorised tool. Dyson explains on its Saudi support page for its cordless vacuums that the maximum power modes are meant for short bursts of intensive cleaning and reduce run time. So ask for the run time in the mode you will really use, with the motorised head.

• A removable battery. Lets you buy a second battery for a large home, or replace it after some years without replacing the whole vacuum.
• Charging time. A vacuum that needs many hours to charge does not suit someone who cleans more than once a day.
• Battery warranty and supply. The battery is the first thing to fade with time. Ask about its warranty and whether an original battery is stocked by the agent.

Cleaner heads and floors

Bin, filter and dust

Fine dust and sand fill the bin quickly and reach the filter. Dyson's filter care guidance says to wash washable filters at least once a month in cold water only, without detergent, and to leave them to dry completely for at least 24 hours before refitting. In practice, that means the vacuum may be without a filter for a whole day unless you keep a spare.

• Ask whether the filter is washable and whether an original spare is available.
• Compare bin capacity and how easily it empties without dust flying at you.
• Look at how well the vacuum seals: leaks at the joints send dust back into the room.

Suction: do not settle for one number

You will see figures such as "air watts" or "pascals", and on their own they do not tell you how much dust will be lifted from your floor. There is an international standard for measuring the performance of household cordless dry vacuum cleaners, IEC 62885-4, which sets methods for measuring the performance characteristics that matter to users. If a maker publishes results under a standard method like this, they are more useful for comparison than a single suction figure. If not, rely on heads that suit your floors and the run time in the real mode.

Weight, balance and charging

A vacuum with its motor at the handle is lighter on the floor and heavier on the wrist when you lift it up high; one with the motor near the floor is the opposite. Hold it in the shop if you can. Ask about the charging dock: does it mount on the wall, and does it need a socket nearby? Power in Saudi Arabia is 230 V at 60 Hz and the common plug is type G, so make sure the charger has the right plug and does not need an adapter.

Who it suits, and who it does not

It suits someone in a flat or a mid-size home who likes quick daily cleaning, households with children or cats that need a vacuum ready at any moment, and people who clean their own car. On its own it is often not enough for a large home with majlis rooms covered in thick carpet unless you add a second battery, or for someone with a weak wrist who needs to lift it a lot.

Common mistakes

• Comparing maximum stated run times as if they were in the same mode.
• Buying a carpet-only head for a home that is all ceramic and fine sand.
• Refitting the filter while it is still damp after washing.
• Expecting a stick vacuum to replace deep cleaning of large rugs.
• Forgetting to ask about an original replacement battery.

• Define your floors and the area one charge needs to cover.
• Ask for the run time in the medium mode with the motorised head.
• Check the battery warranty and the supply of original filters and batteries.
