Small, useful things on Amazon at a low price

A kitchen scale, an adhesive hook, a car charger, a tyre gauge, a cleaning cloth: low-priced things that earn their place every day. Here is what to check in each before it goes in your basket.

This guide is about small things that earn their place every day at home and in the car: a kitchen scale, food containers, an adhesive hook, a car charger, a tyre pressure gauge, a cleaning cloth. Their price is usually low, but no figure is written here, because the price on Amazon changes from day to day and from seller to seller. The number you pay is the one on the product page at checkout, plus any shipping.

A cheap item that turns out wrong costs little, but the same mistakes repeat: a hook that falls off the wall after a day, a container whose lid cannot go in the microwave, a gauge that reads in a different unit from the label on your car door. So each item below says what to read before it goes in your basket, grouped by where you use it: the kitchen, the phone, organising the home, the car, then cleaning.

For the kitchen

• A digital kitchen scale. Read two numbers on the maker's page: the maximum weight it takes, and its graduation, the smallest step the display shows. Reading in whole grams is enough for everyday cooking; weighing small amounts of spices or coffee needs a finer step. Make sure it has a tare button to subtract the bowl, and know which battery it takes or how it charges before you buy.
• A vegetable peeler. The Y-shaped kind suits larger vegetables such as carrots and potatoes, while some people prefer a straight peeler for apples and cucumbers. Read what the blade is made of and whether it is dishwasher-safe, and make sure the handle is comfortable in the hand you use, right or left.
• Glass food containers. Glass does not hold smells and stains the way much plastic does, but it is heavier. Read what the maker says about the base and the lid separately: many lids are plastic and cannot go in the oven even when the base can. Read the maker's warning about sudden temperature changes, such as going straight from the freezer into a hot oven, and count the pieces: a set with a large number may count the lids in it.

For the phone

• A USB-C to USB-A adapter. Useful when you want to plug a flash drive, a mouse or a keyboard into a phone or laptop that only has USB-C ports. Check the direction: the male USB-C end goes into your device, and the female USB-A end takes the flash drive. Make sure your phone supports a flash drive at all, a feature called OTG, and remember that the adapter's stated speed matters only when moving files, not when charging.

For organising the home

• Adhesive hooks that come off without a mark. Command's instructions for its clear hooks say to clean the surface with isopropyl rubbing alcohol, not household cleaners, which leave a slippery film, and then wait an hour before hanging anything. Read the maximum weight per hook on the pack and the surfaces the maker lists, and do not hang anything heavier, however strong the hook looks.
• Slim velvet clothes hangers. A slim hanger saves space in the wardrobe, and velvet holds a shirt or an abaya so it does not slide off. Compare the hanger's width with the shoulders of your clothes, especially thobes and jackets, read the weight the maker states, and check whether the hook swivels so you can hang from either side.

For the car

• A car charger with a USB-C port. USB-IF explains that under Power Delivery the device requests the power it needs in watts, so start with your phone: how much does it accept? Read what each port gives on its own and how the power splits when you charge two devices, because the large number on the box may be both ports together. Check whether a cable comes with it or is bought separately.
• A tyre pressure gauge. According to NHTSA, the right pressure for your car is on the label on the edge of the driver's door or in the owner's manual, and it is measured with the tyres cold, before you drive or after the car has stood for at least three hours, at least once a month. In summer the easiest time is the morning before you set off. Choose a gauge that shows the same unit as the label, PSI or bar, so you do not have to convert.
• A windscreen sunshade. In the summer sun a shade keeps the dashboard and steering wheel cooler while the car is parked. Measure your windscreen from the inside, width and height, and compare it with the size the maker states; a shade that is too small leaves gaps and one that is too large will not sit still. Read how it folds and stores, and never leave it where it blocks your view while driving.

For cleaning

• Microfibre cleaning cloths. A set in several colours lets you keep one colour for the kitchen, one for the bathroom and one for glass and the car, so dirt does not travel from one place to another. Read the size and number of cloths and the washing instructions the maker gives, and wash them apart from clothes that shed lint.
• A lint roller. Useful on clothes, abayas, sofas and car seats, especially with cat hair. Read how many sheets the roll has and whether refill rolls fit the same handle, because the handle stays and the sheets run out.
