How to choose a television

Start with your room and source devices, not a panel-technology label. Size, light and required inputs are evidence you can establish before comparing models.

Start with the room, not the spec sheet

Record the seating distance, available width and height, stand depth or mount position, and where windows and lamps reflect. Compare those measurements with the full dimensions in the maker's sheet, then view the intended size from your distance if possible. Room fit is evidence you can gather before comparing panel labels.

What actually makes the difference

• Panel type. Do not treat OLED, QLED or Mini-LED as a verdict. Compare model-specific measurements for black level, peak and sustained brightness, reflection handling and viewing angle, then read the warranty terms relevant to image retention.
• Brightness and reflection handling. Compare measurements from the same test method and, if possible, inspect the screen with a light source placed like the one in your room.
• Refresh and gaming features. HDMI defines formats and features including 4K at 120 Hz, VRR and ALLM, but a label does not prove that a particular television implements all of them. Match the source device's output to the exact model and input.
• HDMI ports. Count the devices you will connect, including any audio system. Check each physical port in the model manual for the format and feature you need; do not infer that all ports have identical capabilities.
• Sound. Listen at the intended distance if possible. If it is not acceptable, include an external audio system and the required HDMI/eARC port in the plan before buying.
• Operating system and apps. Confirm the apps you actually use are available in that platform's store in your market, not another one.

Common trade-offs

It suits you / it does not

• A larger size belongs on the shortlist only after it fits the space and feels comfortable at your seating distance.
• Prioritise brightness and reflection evidence when your own room has strong ambient light.
• Prioritise 4K/120, VRR or ALLM only when a source you own supports the feature and the intended port is documented to accept it.

Before you measure the wall one last time

• Measure the space and the distance before choosing the size, not after.
• Check the number of HDMI ports and the capability of each one in the model's spec sheet.
• Confirm the full model number on the merchant page exactly matches the model whose specification and manual you read.
• Ask about local warranty and service, and about wall-mount installation cost if you will mount it.
• Confirm Arabic language support in the platform if that matters to you.

Where to read the panel specifications themselves

Start with the manufacturer's specification and manual for the full regional model number. HDMI Licensing Administrator's HDMI 2.1b feature page defines features such as 4K/120, VRR, ALLM and eARC, while its Ultra High Speed cable programme explains the certification label for cables intended to carry those features. The model manual, not the HDMI version name, remains the evidence for which physical input implements each feature.
