How to check a discount code works before you pay

A code that the discount box accepts does not always mean the discount reached everything in your basket. Two minutes of checking before payment save you a refund request and a long chat with customer service.

Why a code is accepted but the discount does not appear

Most problems with discount codes are not that the code is fake, but that it has conditions your basket did not meet. The store sets the conditions and checks the code at payment; that is why the WESH Coupons page shows the terms and validity as the store announced them, and cannot promise a code will work on every order. What you can do is know where codes usually fail, and check before you pay, not after.

Remember too that the Ministry of Commerce's discount controls require the discount percentage to be specific and clear to the consumer, and keep the consumer's right to choose a product without being bound by a promotion. If you find an undisclosed condition, it is worth noting.

Where codes usually fail

• Expiry. Some codes end at a set hour, not at midnight. Read the end date on the card before you start shopping, not at checkout.
• Minimum basket. Many codes work only above a total the store sets, sometimes counted before shipping or after excluding items already on sale.
• Excluded sections and brands. A store may exclude electronics, certain brands or gift cards. The code is accepted, but the discount lands on part of the basket only.
• First order or new account only. If you already have an account at the store, a first-order code will usually not work, even with another e-mail.
• App only, or site only. Some codes are for one channel. Use the channel the terms name.
• Country and currency. A code for a store's UAE site may not work on its Saudi site. Make sure you are on your country's site.
• Does not combine. If your basket holds items the store has already reduced, the code may be refused or only the larger of the two applied.
• Typing. A stray space before or after a pasted code is enough to reject it. Paste it, then delete any space around it.

The two-minute check before paying

The E-Commerce Law requires the store to give the consumer an invoice showing each item's cost and the total including fees, taxes and delivery charges where they apply. Keep it; it is what you rely on if the amount charged differs from what you saw.

If the store rejects the code

• Read the rejection message as it is; it often names the reason: a minimum, an excluded item, or an expired code.
• Try a basket with a single item from the eligible section, to see whether the problem is the code or one product.
• Message the store's customer service before paying, with a screenshot of the code and its terms. A promise to add the discount later is hard to follow up.
• Go back to the Coupons page or the codes of the week for another code for the same store whose terms fit your basket.
• If no code works, decide on the price alone: is the order worth it without a discount?

Beware of "codes" that ask for your details

A real code is text you copy and paste into the store. Any page or message asking for your card number or a verification code "to activate the discount" is not a discount code. The Ministry of Commerce reminds consumers that it never asks for account or card numbers, passwords or verification codes, and that commercial complaints go through the Balagh Tijari app or 1900. Before ordering from a store you do not know, you can check it through the Saudi Business Center's authenticated-store inquiry.

Your list before paying

• I read the code's terms and end date before I started.
• I am on my country's site or app, in the channel the terms name.
• The basket passes any minimum, after excluded items are removed.
• The summary has a separate discount line matching the announced value.
• The code still shows after choosing the payment method.
• I took a screenshot of the summary before tapping pay.

Limits of this guide
