A travel eSIM saves you the airport SIM queue, but it is no use if your phone is locked to a carrier, if the plan runs out on day two, or if your bank's text arrives while your Saudi number is switched off.
The Communications, Space and Technology Commission explains that an eSIM is an electronic SIM built into the device that works digitally in place of a traditional SIM, so it needs no slot and cannot be removed. GSMA, which writes its specification, explains that it lets a device store more than one operator profile and switch between them without swapping a plastic card.
For travel, this means you can buy a data plan for your destination before you leave and activate it on arrival, while keeping your Saudi SIM in the phone. Apple notes that supported iPhones can have two eSIMs active at the same time: one for your home number and another for the country you are visiting.
Before you buy: your phone first
Does your model support eSIM? Support sometimes differs between versions of the same model by country. Check the full model number on the maker's page, as the GCC smartphone guide explains.
Is your phone carrier-unlocked? On iPhone: Settings, General, About, and look next to Carrier Lock; "No SIM restrictions" means it is unlocked. Apple notes that only your current carrier can unlock it. On Android, check the maker's or your carrier's support page.
Will you have internet when installing? Installing the eSIM needs a connection. Install it at home on Wi-Fi before you travel if the provider allows.
The three options and what each gives up
Option
Suits
What you give up
A roaming pack from your Saudi carrier
A short trip; anyone who wants the same number for calls
Compare its cost with the alternatives, and read its fair-use terms
An eSIM from a global travel provider
Buying before take-off, or visiting several countries
Often data only with no local number; the partner network is the provider's choice
A SIM or eSIM from a local operator at the destination
A longer stay, or needing a local number
Buying after arrival; a passport may be needed to register
How to read an eSIM plan
Countries covered, by name. A "Europe" or "Asia" plan does not mean every country. Look for your country itself, and your transit airport if you will need data there.
The partner network. The provider sells you access through a local operator. If it names it, read about its coverage in the cities you will visit.
Data versus days. Estimate your use: maps and messages use little; video calls and streaming use far more. A smaller plan you can top up is easier than a large one you never use.
When validity starts. Some plans start counting at installation, others at first connection in the destination. The difference can eat two days of your trip.
Hotspot. If you will share the connection with a laptop or family, check the plan allows it.
Data only, or a number? Most travel plans are data only; calls go through apps.
Top-ups and support. Know how to add data inside the app, and whether the provider's support is reachable while you travel.
Your Saudi number and bank texts
Most verification codes from banks and government services arrive by text to your Saudi number. If you switch the Saudi SIM off entirely, you may not be able to complete a payment or a sign-in abroad. A common approach: keep the Saudi line on to receive texts, make the travel eSIM your data line, and turn off data roaming on the Saudi line so it does not use roaming data without you noticing. Apple notes that from iOS 26 your iPhone may automatically switch your home SIM back on and turn off the travel eSIM when you return, depending on the country.
Common mistakes
Buying the plan before checking the phone is unlocked.
Deleting the eSIM profile assuming the same code can reinstall it; read the provider's terms before deleting.
Leaving data roaming on for the Saudi line.
Entering bank details over public hotel or airport Wi-Fi.
Buying a QR code from an unknown seller on social media instead of a provider with an official app or site.
If you are travelling with a phone and a power bank, remember the power bank goes in your hand luggage; see the power bank guide. Current store offers are on the Coupons page.
Before you travel
My phone supports eSIM and is not carrier-locked.
The plan names my destination, and my transit stop if I need it.
I know when the validity starts, and the data suits my use.
I installed the eSIM or saved how to install it, with activation steps.
The Saudi line receives texts, and data roaming on it is off.
I know how to top up and contact the provider from abroad.
