How to choose a hair dryer or straightener

Wattage and maximum temperature do not tell the whole story. What decides the choice is your hair's length and thickness, real heat control, plate width, and the tool's safety and plug.

Start from your hair and how you use it

Before comparing brands, ask: how long and thick is your hair? How many times a week will you use the tool? Do you need the dryer only for fast drying, or for styling too? Will you travel with it? A tool for short hair that dries in minutes is not the one for long, thick hair styled every day.

One rule applies to both: high heat is not a goal in itself. A tool that gives you real control over heat and speed lets you use the setting that is enough for you instead of always forcing the highest.

Dryer, straightener, or both?

A dryer dries and gives volume and overall shape; a straightener straightens or waves hair section by section on dry hair. Many people need only the dryer and buy a straightener they use only for occasions. If the goal is straight hair every day, a good straightener with a simple dryer may serve better than an expensive dryer with many extras. Some tools combine both, such as hot-air brushes, which are convenient but usually less powerful than each separate tool.

The dryer: what really matters

• Power and airflow. The wattage shows heating power, but drying speed also depends on how much air it moves and how hard. Read both figures if they are published; do not rely on watts alone.
• Separate heat and speed settings. They let you use strong air at lower heat, or the reverse. A cool-shot button helps set a style.
• Weight and balance. A heavy dryer tires the arm with long hair. Hold it in the shop if you can.
• Nozzles. A narrow nozzle for directed styling, and a diffuser for wavy or curly hair. Check they are in the box.
• The rear air filter. In a dusty environment lint and dust gather there quickly. Choose a filter that comes off and cleans easily.
• The cord. A long cord with a swivel joint prevents twisting and reduces strain where it enters the dryer.

The straightener: what really matters

• Temperature control. A straightener with several settings or a display gives more control than one with a single high setting. Always start from the lowest setting that gives the result.
• Plate width. Wide plates are faster on long, thick hair; narrow plates are more precise on short hair, fringes and waves.
• Plate material. Ceramic, titanium and various coatings feel different in glide and heat spread. Words such as "keratin", "argan" or "ionic" are mostly marketing, so do not let them decide.
• Automatic shut-off. An important safety feature if you forget it plugged in.
• A lock and heat-resistant pouch. They help with storage and travel.

The practical classes

Safety and power

Household hair-care appliances have their own international safety standard, IEC 60335-2-23, which covers hair dryers, hair straighteners and curling irons. Power in Saudi Arabia is 230 V at 60 Hz and the common plug is type G, so choose a version with the right plug and an agent's warranty rather than using an adapter with a high-power appliance.

The UK charity Electrical Safety First advises not to use a dryer or straightener near a sink full of water or while bathing, not to handle them with wet hands, to check the cable regularly and replace the appliance if it is damaged, to keep a dryer's air openings free of hair and lint, and not to use a straightener on wet hair. If you use the tool in the bathroom, make sure the circuit is protected by a residual-current device.

Warranty and parts

Ask how long the warranty is and who provides it in the Kingdom, and whether nozzles and filters are sold separately if lost. A tool imported from another market may not be covered by the local agent, and parts may be hard to find.

Common mistakes

• Choosing on wattage or maximum temperature alone.
• Always using the highest heat because it is there.
• Wrapping the cord tightly around the dryer after each use.
• Neglecting the dryer's filter until it runs hotter than usual.
• Buying a tool with a non-Saudi plug and relying on a cheap adapter.

• Define your hair length and thickness and how often you will use the tool.
• Check for separate heat settings and a cool shot, or automatic shut-off.
• Check the plug and the local warranty.
