This is a guide to reading a label and comparing a package, not a treatment guide. The aim is to know exactly what you are buying, how long it will last, and how to store it in a hot climate.
·
Read the package without turning it into treatment advice
Market and responsible party. Identify the country the label was prepared for, the responsible manufacturer/importer and a traceable product or notification reference where your regulator provides one.
Function and directions. Read what the package says the product is for, how much to use and where not to use it. A marketing category such as serum or cream does not establish a medical effect.
Ingredients under the applicable rule. Do not estimate concentration or effectiveness from position alone. As one transparent regulatory example, the EU cosmetics regulation requires descending order by weight at addition, but allows ingredients below 1% in any order after those above 1%.
Minimum durability and period after opening. Treat the exact symbol and period under the market's applicable rule. The same EU regulation identifies the open-jar symbol as period after opening followed by months and/or years, with exceptions where the concept is not relevant.
Warnings, batch and storage. Follow the exact package. If a seal, batch reference, date, directions or required warning is absent or unreadable, do not infer it from a merchant description.
The claim decides the category. The US Food and Drug Administration defines a cosmetic by its purpose — cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness — and a drug as an article intended to diagnose, cure, mitigate, treat or prevent disease, or to affect the structure or any function of the body. One sentence on the package can move a product from one category to the other. What matters to a buyer: cosmetic products and ingredients, colour additives aside, do not require FDA approval before they go on the market, while drugs generally do.
Price comparison. Compare the same declared quantity and calculate price per millilitre or gram, but include shipping, tax and likely use before the labelled durability limit.

Sunscreen: what the label actually means
This is the one product in this guide whose label is governed by drug rules rather than cosmetic rules in many markets, which is why its wording can be read literally instead of interpreted.
"Broad spectrum" is not a marketing adjective. The US Food and Drug Administration states that broad-spectrum sunscreens help protect against both forms of UV radiation, UVA and UVB. A sunscreen without the phrase addresses part of the problem.
The SPF number has a useful ceiling. The FDA recommends choosing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, and notes that higher values give greater sunburn protection up to 50.
No sunscreen is waterproof. The FDA is explicit: there is no such thing as waterproof sunscreen. A product labelled water resistant must state whether protection lasts 40 minutes or 80 minutes while swimming or sweating — those two numbers are what you are buying.
Timing and reapplication are part of the product. Apply 15 minutes before sun exposure, and reapply at least every two hours, more often when swimming or sweating. A bottle that lasts a very long time usually means less is being applied than the number on the label assumes.
What the American Academy of Dermatology recommends for daily use: broad-spectrum protection, SPF 30 or higher, and water resistance.
Health boundary
This guide recommends no ingredient, concentration, routine or product and makes no treatment claim.
Do not rely on it to determine the cause of irritation, allergy, acne or another symptom.
For a reaction, existing condition, pregnancy-related concern or interaction with prescribed treatment, ask a qualified clinician or pharmacist.
The American Academy of Dermatology says dermatologists are the experts when it comes to skin, and names what warrants a visit: a suspicious spot that changes, itches or bleeds. Those are not purchasing decisions, and a guide like this one does not answer them.
Where to read the label, and who answers the rest
Start with the complete package and manufacturer's product sheet, then use the regulator and labelling rule applicable to the country of sale. Articles 19 and Annex VII of the EU Cosmetic Products Regulation are direct evidence for the ingredient-order and period-after-opening explanations above only in that regulatory context. They do not establish Saudi or GCC compliance. For a Saudi purchase, verify the exact current SFDA requirement or product record rather than relying on an organisation homepage. For the line between a cosmetic and a drug, and for reading a sunscreen label literally, see the two US Food and Drug Administration pages: Is it a cosmetic, a drug, or both? and Sunscreen: how to help protect your skin from the sun. For general clinical guidance and when to see a clinic, the American Academy of Dermatology. All three are references to read, not a substitute for advice about your own skin.
