Perfume is among the most imitated products because it is small, famous and hard to judge from a photo. The key question is not the discount but the seller, then what the packaging and batch code say on arrival.
Perfume is small, well known by name and hard to judge from a photo, which makes it one of the most imitated products. Saudi regulators announce from time to time that they have shut down outlets and warehouses selling, filling and relabelling counterfeit perfumes. That does not make every online offer suspect, but it means the most important question is not "how big is the discount?" but "who is the seller?".
Chanel, for example, says plainly on its anti-counterfeit page that the only way to be sure its products are genuine is to buy from its boutiques or its authorised retailers, and that a deal that looks too good to be true is probably counterfeit. The rule holds for most major brands.
Start with the seller, not the platform
On large stores and marketplaces, the same product may be sold by several sellers: the store itself, the brand's agent, or an outside seller listing on the platform. The platform's name is not enough; look at the seller named on that specific product page.
The list of authorised sellers. Many brands publish on their website where their products are officially sold in the Kingdom or the Gulf. Look it up and compare.
The seller's identity. The Saudi E-Commerce Law requires sellers to disclose who they are and how to contact them. A shop with no trade name and no clear contact is a reason to pause.
The invoice. Ask for an invoice in the seller's name with its VAT number, and keep it with screenshots of the order.
The return policy. Many stores do not accept perfume returns once the wrapping is opened. Read the condition before ordering, and know what to do if a product you doubt arrives.
Check registration with the SFDA
Cosmetic products, including perfumes, are registered with the Saudi Food and Drug Authority before being marketed in the Kingdom, and the SFDA publishes a public list of cosmetic products notified for marketing. Searching it by product or brand name gives you one more signal. Remember that being listed is a notification step and does not by itself prove that the bottle in your hand is genuine; authenticity comes from the seller first.
When the order arrives
The outer packaging. Look at print quality, straight text and whether the typeface matches what you know of the brand. Spelling mistakes and faded colours are warning signs.
The batch code. Most brands print a batch code on the bottom of the box and engrave or print one on the bottom of the bottle. The two should match. Sites such as CheckFresh help you find the approximate production date for many brands from that code.
Bottle, sprayer and cap. The cap fits firmly, the sprayer gives an even mist, and the liquid is clear with no particles.
Do not judge from the first sniff. A first impression can mislead either way. Compare with a sample from a trusted shop if you can.
Testers, decants and parallel imports
Type
What it is
What to watch
Tester bottle
A bottle meant for shop trials, often in a plain box and sometimes without a cap
May be genuine from the brand but not meant for retail sale, with different return and warranty terms. Buy only from a seller you know.
Decants
A small amount moved from a full bottle into another container
There is no way to verify the source once it is moved, so everything rests on the seller.
Parallel import
A product from another market sold outside the agent's channels
May be genuine, but without the local agent's warranty or returns, and possibly an older batch.
Heat and delivery
In a Saudi summer, a parcel can sit for hours in a delivery van or outside the door. Direct sun is no friend to perfume. Arrange a delivery slot when you are home, do not leave the parcel in the car, and once it arrives keep the perfume away from direct sunlight.
Common mistakes
Buying from a social media account with no trade name and no invoice.
Trusting the platform's name without checking the actual seller.
Throwing away the box before matching its batch code with the bottle.
Buying a tester or decant from an unknown seller because it is "much cheaper".
Opening the wrapping before reading the return policy.
Before you pay
Make sure the seller is the brand, one of its authorised sellers, or a known shop with a clear identity.
If you doubt a product after it arrives, contact the seller first, then report it to the SFDA or the Ministry of Commerce through their official channels.
