How to choose a home security camera

A camera that protects your home can also expose it if it is set up carelessly. Before resolution and field of view, ask where the recordings are kept, who can watch them, and whether an outdoor camera can survive our summer.

Decide what you want to see

Start with the place and the goal: watching the front gate and yard, keeping an eye on children or an elderly relative indoors, or knowing who rang while you are out. Each goal leads to a different type. A video doorbell suits knowing who is at the door, an indoor pan-and-tilt camera suits a living room, and a fixed outdoor camera suits the driveway or the wall. Do not buy a six-camera kit before you know where each one will go and why.

What actually makes the difference

• Where recordings are kept. Local storage on a microSD card or a recorder (NVR) keeps footage at home with no subscription, but it is lost if the camera or recorder is stolen. Cloud storage keeps a copy off-site but usually needs a monthly plan and means your footage sits on the company's servers. Before buying, know what works without a subscription and what stops.
• The right memory card. Continuous recording writes to the card all day, so choose a card made for continuous recording (high endurance) at a capacity the camera's manual supports.
• Security before features. The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) advises changing the default password to a strong unique one, turning on automatic updates, using two-step verification, and switching off remote viewing if you do not need it. The European standard ETSI EN 303 645 for consumer IoT security requires that devices are not sold with universal default passwords. Choose a maker that publishes security updates and a clear support period.
• Power and connection. A wired camera never needs charging but needs a socket or cabling. A battery camera is easy to mount but must be recharged regularly and suffers in heat. If Wi-Fi is weak at the gate, the camera will drop out; measure signal strength at the mounting spot before blaming the camera, and you may need an extra Wi-Fi point.
• Night vision and resolution. Higher resolution helps read detail but uses more storage and internet. At night what matters is the infrared range or built-in light, and whether the image is clear enough to recognise a face at the door.
• Smart alerts. Telling people from cars and animals cuts nuisance notifications. Check where that detection runs, on the camera or in the cloud, and whether it needs a plan.
• The app and Arabic. You will use the app every day, so confirm it is in your app store and supports sharing access with family members on separate accounts, not one password everyone passes around.

Indoor or outdoor

What matters in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf

• Heat and dust. An outdoor camera faces direct sun and dust. Read the operating temperature range in the model's manual rather than trusting the word "outdoor". An IP rating describes protection from dust and water under IEC 60529, not heat tolerance. Mount the camera under shade or a canopy if you can.
• Privacy and neighbours. Point cameras at your own property and entrance, not at neighbours' homes or windows. Tell everyone in the home about the cameras, including domestic workers and guests, and never put a camera in bedrooms, bathrooms or private quarters. Avoid posting footage that shows people on social media.
• Personal data. The Personal Data Protection Law governs processing of personal data in the Kingdom and is supervised by SDAIA. If the camera is for a shop or business, check your obligations under it before installing.
• Approval and warranty. Wireless cameras are telecom equipment that needs approval from the Communications, Space and Technology Commission; ask about the in-Kingdom warranty and the included plug.

Common mistakes

• Keeping the default password, or sharing one account among the whole family.
• Buying a battery camera for a spot that gets sun all afternoon.
• Finding out after buying that smart alerts or saving clips need a subscription.
• Using an ordinary memory card for continuous recording and losing clips when you need them.

Before you pay

• Decide each camera's spot and purpose, and check Wi-Fi strength there.
• Know what works without a subscription and where recordings are kept.
• Check for security updates and two-step verification in the app.
• For outdoor: the IP rating and operating temperature range in the manual.
• Get a continuous-recording memory card at a supported capacity.
• After installing: change the password and update the firmware straight away.
