How to book a hotel for less: codes, offers and comparison

The nightly rate in search results is rarely what you pay. What decides the saving is the total for the same room on the same terms, how flexible cancellation is, and whether a code really applies to your booking.

Compare the total, not the nightly rate

Booking platforms show the nightly rate first because it is the smaller number. What you pay is the sum of the nights with taxes and fees, and sometimes charges paid at the hotel itself. So before any comparison, fix four things: the same dates, the same room type, the same meals included and the same cancellation terms. Then compare the final total on the last screen before payment, not on the results page.

When you book through an online store or platform, the E-Commerce Law requires the invoice to show the total including fees and taxes. Keep the booking confirmation and invoice together.

Cancellation matters more than the code

Before hunting for a discount, know that the E-Commerce Law's seven-day cancellation right does not cover contracts for accommodation services, according to the law. That means your booking's own terms govern cancellation: whether it is free to cancel and until when, or non-refundable. In 2026 the Ministry of Tourism updated the Hospitality Facility Regulation, covering among other things reservations, payments and online marketing; check with the Ministry for what facilities must do today.

A practical trick: if you booked a free-cancellation rate, check the price again before the cancellation deadline. If the same room on the same terms is now lower, book the new one first, then cancel the old one.

Booking-platform codes: read their terms

• Minimums. Some codes need a minimum number of nights or booking value.
• App or new account. Many booking codes are app-only or for a first booking.
• Excluded hotels or destinations. A code may not apply to every hotel or to peak seasons.
• Does not combine with member prices. Sometimes the signed-in member price beats the code, sometimes they do not combine. Compare both.
• Visible in the summary. Make sure the discount shows as its own line before payment, not after your stay.

Other ways to lower the total

• Flexible dates. Prices change between weekdays and weekends and rise in seasons and holidays. Moving arrival by a day can change the total.
• Booking direct. Compare the platform with the hotel's own site; sometimes the terms differ, such as breakfast or cancellation, not just the price.
• Loyalty programmes and card offers. If you belong to a hotel programme or your card has travel offers, include them in the comparison under their written terms.
• The real location. A cheaper hotel further away can end up costing more once daily transport is added.
• Currency. If offered payment in two currencies, compare both amounts, and know your bank's fees on foreign transactions.

Common mistakes

• Choosing a non-refundable rate for a small difference, then plans change.
• Comparing a "standard" room on one platform with a "view" room on another as if they were the same.
• Forgetting the number of guests and children in the search, so the price changes at checkout.
• Relying on a screenshot of an old offer instead of checking the terms at booking time.

In Saudi Arabia: check the licence

The Ministry of Tourism has launched a service on its website to verify hospitality facility licences, and its licensed entities can be looked up on the national platform. Before booking a serviced apartment or an unfamiliar hotel, especially in peak seasons, check its licence. For enquiries or feedback you can contact the unified tourism centre on 930.

Be wary of offers arriving by message or social account that ask for a direct bank transfer to confirm a booking. Pay through an official booking channel that gives you a confirmation and invoice.

• The property is licensed, if it is in Saudi Arabia.
