Weak home Wi-Fi is rarely fixed by a bigger speed number on the box. What usually fixes it is the right placement, the right number of access points for your home and its walls, and a generation your phone and laptop actually support.
Before buying anything, separate two problems: the speed of the subscription itself, and Wi-Fi coverage inside the home. Measure the speed next to the router, then in the far room. If it is weak even next to the router, the problem is usually the plan or the line and a new router will not fix it; talk to your provider. If it is good next to the router and collapses upstairs or in the far majlis, that is a coverage problem, and the right equipment helps.
Homes here are often large and multi-storey, with concrete and block walls and sometimes steel in the ceilings. These materials weaken the signal, especially on the faster, shorter-range 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands. So one strong router in a side room can do worse than two average access points in the right places.
What actually makes the difference
One router or a mesh system. A small flat is served by one good router in a central, raised spot. A large home or several floors suits a mesh system of several points working as one network with one name. The Wi-Fi Alliance describes EasyMesh as multiple access points that work together, steer devices to the best point, and can be extended later.
Wired links between points. If your home has Ethernet cabling between floors, choose a system that supports Ethernet backhaul. It keeps speed far better than a wireless link through walls.
Wi-Fi generation by your devices. Wi-Fi 6 is a reasonable baseline today. Wi-Fi 6E adds the 6 GHz band, and Wi-Fi 7 adds wider channels and Multi-Link Operation (MLO), which combines bands. You only benefit from the newer generation if your phone and laptop support it, so check your devices before paying for a generation you will not use.
The 6 GHz band in the Kingdom. Saudi Arabia opened the whole 6 GHz band for licence-exempt use in 2021, so Wi-Fi 6E and 7 equipment can use it here. Remember that this band has shorter range indoors: excellent in the same room, weaker through walls.
Ethernet ports. Count the devices you prefer to cable: the console, the TV, the office PC. Check the number and speed of ports (1 gigabit or more) on each point.
Security and updates. The Wi-Fi Alliance says WPA3 support has been required in new certified devices since 2020 and is mandatory on 6 GHz. Choose equipment with WPA3, automatic firmware updates, and an app that makes you change the default admin password.
Working with your provider. On fibre plans the provider's box usually stays because it carries the connection, and the router or mesh system you buy sits behind it. Ask your provider how they support connecting it before you buy.
The practical options
Home
Sensible choice
What you give up
A flat or small single floor
One good router in a central spot
One corner may stay weak
A villa with two or three floors
A mesh system with two or three points
Higher cost and more boxes
A home with Ethernet cabling
Mesh with wired backhaul, or wired access points
Needs the cabling sorted first
Only one weak room
An extender or an extra point from the same system
A separate extender may halve speed and add a network name
What matters in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf
Approval. Wi-Fi equipment is wireless equipment that needs approval from the Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST), and its services let you look up approved devices. A unit made for another market may have different band settings.
Plug and warranty. Check the power adapter has the Kingdom's plug (type G) or comes with a suitable adapter, and that the warranty is claimable inside the Kingdom.
Heat. Do not put the router in a closed cupboard or by a sun-facing window. Ventilation keeps it stable in summer.
Common mistakes
Leaving the router in the corner where the line comes in, not in the middle of the home.
Buying Wi-Fi 7 when every device at home is Wi-Fi 5 or 6.
Mixing extenders from different makers with several network names.
Keeping the default admin password and never updating the firmware.
Before you pay
Measure speed near and far from the router to know whether it is coverage or the plan.
Sketch the home and mark where the points will go.
Check which Wi-Fi generation your main devices support.
Count the Ethernet ports you need at each point.
Confirm WPA3 and automatic updates.
Ask your provider how to connect behind their box.
