How to choose a phone case and screen protector

A case and screen protector cost less than any repair, but a wrong choice can break the fingerprint sensor or wireless charging, or trap heat in our summer. This is what really separates a piece that protects your phone from one that gets in the way.

Start with the exact model

Phones in the same series differ in size and in camera and button placement, even by millimetres. Write down the full model name as it appears in Settings and make sure the case or protector is made for that model, not "compatible with" a whole family. The product photo is not enough; read the model name in the title and description.

The case: what actually makes the difference

• A raised lip. The most important thing about a case is that its edge rises slightly above the screen and around the cameras, so if the phone lands face down the screen and lenses do not touch the ground first.
• Corners. Most drops land on a corner. A case with reinforced or air-cushioned corners absorbs a shock better than a thin case of even thickness.
• Material. Silicone feels good but collects dust and drags in a pocket. Clear flexible plastic (TPU) is practical but yellows with time, sun and heat. A hard shell is slim but absorbs less. Leather suffers from sweat and humidity.
• Drop-protection claims. A phrase like "military-grade protection" means nothing without details. Ask for the drop height, onto what surface and how many times, and treat a claim without details as marketing copy.
• Wireless charging and MagSafe. If you use a wireless charger or magnetic accessories, choose a case that states support. Apple warns not to place credit cards or access badges between the phone and a MagSafe charger because it can damage magnetic strips or chips, so be careful with wallet cases.
• Buttons and ports. Buttons should stay crisp, and the port opening wide enough for the charging cable you use, not only the maker's cable.

Screen protectors: the practical types

Screen protectors: what to check

• In-display fingerprint. Some phones use an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor that may not work well with every glass. Samsung recommends an official or Samsung-approved protector for these models and re-registering your fingerprint after fitting one.
• Case compatibility. A full-cover protector can be lifted at the edges by a case, causing bubbles. Choose one stated as case-friendly, or buy both from the same maker.
• What 9H means. 9H refers to a pencil scratch test, not crack resistance. Do not choose on it alone.
• Sensors and front camera. Make sure the earpiece, front camera and proximity sensor are uncovered, or the screen may switch off during calls or face recognition may fail.
• Fitting. An alignment tool or frame in the box saves you bubbles and dust. Fit it in a bathroom after running hot water briefly; the steam reduces dust in the air.

What matters in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf

• Heat. Apple says iPhone is designed for ambient temperatures between 0 and 35 degrees Celsius, that charging slows or stops when the device gets hot, and advises removing the case if the phone heats up while charging. Very thick cases trap heat, so do not leave the phone in the car, and take off a heavy case when charging in summer.
• Sun and yellowing. Clear cases yellow faster in strong sun. If looks matter, choose an opaque colour or a material stated as anti-yellowing.
• Dust. Fine dust gets between case and phone and scuffs the back over time. Take the case off and clean it now and then.

Common mistakes

• Buying a case for a similar model because the photo looks alike, then finding the camera cut-out does not match.
• Fitting full-cover glass on a phone with an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor without checking compatibility.
• Leaving a bank card in a wallet case during magnetic charging.
• Carrying on with a cracked protector; replace it, as the crack can spread or cut a finger.

Before you pay

• Match the full model name in the product title.
• Confirm a raised lip around the screen and cameras.
• Check wireless charging or MagSafe support if you use it.
• Pick a protector that suits your fingerprint sensor and your case.
• Read drop claims with their details, or ignore them.
